I've been trying to avoid the news feeds today. Unless it's weather. Or something very local. I'm not hiding, but when every day brings the same horrific nonsense, one needs to protect one's sanity, right? Our country has devolved into a clown show, albeit one with a huge nuclear arsenal. Yesterday was it, an unelected , South African con man was briefing the press in the Oval Office. The actual President of the United States sat quietly at his desk looking morose and bored. Between them was the con man's four year old son. The kid was looking into the camera, picking his nose like he was mining for gold. As they say, you can't make this shit up.

Things are not going so well in the United States of America right now. We are experiencing something very similar to what happens in small, poor countries with underdeveloped political systems. A small group of people whose brains are addled by greed and hubris are testing the limits of what the system can stand. They don't care who gets hurt because they are sure it won't be them. But as this photo illustrates, things in life have a tendency to go around and come around.

I was recently reminded that in August 1974, Richard Nixon resigned from the presidency of the United States of America. Even though we were grateful for his departure, it was still shocking. (His vice president had beeen run out of office for serious crimes also) I mean, we would never see something this bad again, right? In the past few days we have learned from news reports that the man who left he White House in 2020, may have committed one of the worst breaches of security in the history of this country. We don’t know and may never know how far this extends. Who among this country’s allies have also been compromised by this? In the meantime, we’ve been getting ample proof that the Republican party considers partisan politics above the rule of law. They seem to think that if they threaten to tear the country apart, the rest of us are going to back down and let them get away with this shit. To paraphrase the Chinese curse, we live in interesting times.

And now for something completely different- Mono Lake in October of 2014 or 15, I've lost track.

First, Elon Musk has put the purchase of Twitter on hold. The acquisition is at the stage where the buyers get to look at the books to really see what they are getting into. Maybe what Mr. Musk saw took some of the shine off his new toy. There are certainly other things out there for us all to see that are less shiny.
For instance:
#1 In the recent stock market downturn, the gap between what Musk was offering to pay and what Twitter shares are currently selling for has widened.
#1a The same downturn has negatively affected the price of Tesla shares also, Mr. Musk’s collateral.
#2 The bankers putting up the cash for this hot mess may want more collateral because of #1a and/or a renegotiation of #1.
#3 Mr. Musk may be having second thoughts about how much more skin he’s willing to give up. Maybe his brain and his accountants are willing the battle with his ego this time. It will cost him a billion dollars to back out. Excuse me while I laugh at the misfortune of a fellow human.
The second item is about a bill just passed in the Texas state legislature, HB 20. This law prohibits censorship on social media sites. If a user is being censored by the provider, the user can sue on the basis of their First Amendment(U.S. Constitution) rights to free speech. Free speech includes porn, hate speech, disinformation, Trump, etc. At least according to the Texas State legislature. And according to the article I read, it could also include spam.
I’m not sure how this will affect the rest of us. I’m not an expert but is it possible to put a firewall around Texas? And if not, how far can the tentacles of this beast reach?
