Christmas mushroom

I went out for a short walk yesterday when I saw something I first mistook for a piece of litter. This creature is about four inches across, no idea about its identity. Maybe this is something I should look into this rainy winter?

That's cool.

It rained over Christmas here in central Illinois. I should go outside and look for mushrooms, we have various kinds here. Often fairy rings in several places. Sometimes tiny, beautiful, scarlet cups. One time we had stinkhorns, which were quite smelly but very interesting to see.
